The 2nd workshop on the technical development of the Earth System Model Evaluation Tool (ESMValTool) will be held at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) in the Department of Geography from 15-16 November 2016. The ESMValTool is developed as a community system, open to both users and developers, hence encouraging open exchange of evaluation methods and results (Eyring et al., 2016). This will facilitate and improve Earth System Model (ESM) evaluation beyond the state-of-the-art and aims at supporting model evaluation and development…

CRESCENDO policy briefing: Realizing the 2015 Paris Agreement – Pathways to and benefits of limiting global warming to 1.5°C

February 28, 2017 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm UTC+0
European Parliament, Rue de Trèves 3
Brussels, 1050 Belgium

CRESCENDO is organising a policy briefing on Feb 28th 2017, hosted by Seb Dance MEP at the European Parliament in Brussels, co-organized with the invaluable help from colleagues at the White Rose Brussels Office. The event entitled “Realizing the 2015 Paris Agreement – Pathways to and benefits of limiting global warming to 1.5°C” presented some of the science and policy insights from CRESCENDO’s leading Earth system scientists pertinent to realizing the 2015 Paris Agreement. These insights are now published as…

Our 1st Project interim review is organised in line with the article 22.1.2 of the Grant Agreement in May 23rd 2017. Two external reviewers will be present together with Commission Officers with the aim to assess the following aspects of CRESCENDO: the degree to which the work plan has been carried out and whether all deliverables were completed; whether the objectives are still relevant and provide scientific or industrial breakthrough potential; how resources were planned and used in relation to…

Workshop on ESM evaluation: Evaluating climate and Earth system models at the process level

May 23, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - May 24, 2017 @ 5:00 pm UTC+0
EC, COVENT CARDEN (COV) building, place Rogier 16
Brussels, 1210 Belgium

Four H2020 projects (CRESCENDO, PRIMAVERA, Blue-Action and APPLICATE) plus members of other FP7 invited projects (BAACHUS, STRATOCLIM, DACCIWA, IS-ENES2, ICE-ARC, IMPREX) are joining efforts and organising the Workshop on ESM evaluation: Evaluating climate and Earth system models at the process level (online workshop site). During one and a half days, projects aim to synthesize common methods and underpin activities where we will likely find useful collaborations and that might then include: Identifying key process-level performance metrics/diagnostics. Identifying and sharing suitable evaluation data (observations, reanalysis, process models etc). Identifying…

Earth system science at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition 2017

July 3, 2017 - July 9, 2017
The Royal Society, 6-9 Carlton House Terrace
London, SW1Y 5AG United Kingdom
+ Google Map

CRESCENDO members in the UK take part this summer in the Royal Society summer science exhibition (3 to 9 July 2017) in London, a unique opportunity to showcase the status of the UK Earth system modelling science and help the general public better understand the science behind climate modelling and shed light of some of their burden questions regarding climate change. The exhibit named ‘A Model Earth’ (https://royalsociety.org/science-events-and-lectures/2017/summer-science-exhibition/exhibits/a-model-earth/) has been one of the 22 selected exhibitors from about hundreds of…

Earth System Model Evaluation to Improve Process Understanding Workshop

July 30, 2017 - August 4, 2017
Aspen Global Change Institute, 104 Midland Ave #205
Basalt, CO 81621 United States
+ Google Map

CRESCENDO is heavily-involved and co-organising a highly-creative workshop on Model Evaluation at the Aspen Global Change Institute (AGCI)  (http://www.agci.org/event/17s2 ). The workshop is co-directed by Veronika Eyring and Peter Cox of CRESCENDO, in partnership with Peter Gleckler (Lawrence Livermore) and Greg Flato (Canadian Climate Centre). Its aims are closely aligned to some of the key goals of CRESCENDO, namely to ‘contribute to reducing the spread of climate projections by enabling more complete evaluation of model outputs against observations, and by identifying…

The science of climate change communication workshop

September 25, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm UTC+0
Campus Jussieu, 4 place Jussieu
Paris, 75005 France
+ Google Map

There is a wealth of scientific evidence for climate change – enough to fill five IPCC reports – but there is much less known about how to communicate this climate change research to the public. On September 25th 2017 CRESCENDO organises a one-day practical workshop for early and mid-career researchers in CRESCENDO to gain knowledge of the science of climate change communication, and the confidence to apply this knowledge in practice with non-academic audiences. The training day was led by Asher…

CRESCENDO at COP23: Using advanced Earth System Models to deliver reliable estimates of future global change

November 15, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am UTC+0
EU Pavilion at COP23 Bonn, Germany + Google Map

At this event, the CRESCENDO project presents the latest research in this field, exploring the likelihood of different CO2 emission trajectories realizing the Paris agreement. Findings show that very large and sustained reductions in CO2 emissions, very soon, are the only credible route for staying below 1.5°C or 2°C global warming. Furthermore, staying below 1.5°C warming by 2100 will likely also require massive deployment of technologies for removing CO2 from the atmosphere. Climate – carbon cycle feedbacks will very likely further…
