CRESCENDOschools network – studying climate science with school students more important than ever

The CRESCENDOschools network has just started work on an exciting new goal of partnering some of our research institutes with nearby schools.  We will be working and interacting with 16-18 years old students to co-develop novel, educational and informative materials and activities on climate change and climate models. Three schools in Europe have already embarked on this new venture which will see students, teachers and researchers meeting up over the next year to work together on new ways to share project finding with the wider community and increase awareness and understanding about the science behind climate change.

The CRESCENDO General Assembly 2016, 27-29 Sept, Rome, Italy: Highlights and feedback survey results

27-29 Sept 2016, Rome, Italy

This year, CRESCENDO’s General Assembly was held by Project Partner CNR at its headquarters in Rome, Italy. Special thanks go to Jost von Hardenberg for acting as local organiser for this meeting. The annual meeting ran over two full days (27-28th sept) plus an extra day (29th Sept) with optional attendance dedicated to a half-day scoping meeting focused on “Potential CRESCENDO contributions to the 1.5/2C warming Special Report” with around 50 attendees. It was a very successful meeting with over 80 attendees from all CRESCENDO partners, plus one representative, Pier Luigi Vidale from the H2020 project PRIMAVERA and one representative, Wilfran Moufouma-Okia from the IPCC Working Group I.

All presentations from the meeting and full version of the meeting minutes and post-meeting survey results have now been made available on our Intranet (https://www.crescendoproject.eu/intranet/member-account-page/members-login-page/).

CRESCENDO supports carbon cycle planning workshop

The carbon cycle is a key component of the climate system and supporting carbon cycle development, simulations and analysis is a central strand of CRESCENDO.

In May, 15 scientists, including representative from 6 CRESCENDO partners met in Paris to discuss and finalise experiment plans for C4MIP: the Coupled Climate-carbon cycle Model Intercomparison Project (www.c4mip.net)

Chris Jones from the Met Office Hadley Centre, co-chair of C4MIP and CRESCENDO RT lead for Evaluation (RT2), organised the workshop which was supported by CRESCENDO travel funding and kindly hosted by CRECENDO partner, IPSL in Paris. The workshop was targeted at European carbon cycle modellers: “We thought about hosting the meeting in Exeter”, Chris explained, “but we wanted to minimise travel time and carbon emissions which made Paris – a much more central and accessible venue – the perfect option.”

The CRESCENDO Project: Next generation of European Earth System Models

The CRESCENDO project, led by Prof Colin Jones from the University of Leeds facilitates a coordinated European contribution to the 6th Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) where the climate research community compares a range of International Earth system models using common sets of experimental protocols, to improve our knowledge of the Earth’s climate processes and provide the best possible future projections to governments and decision-makers. CRESCENDO in particular better informs a number of key Model Intercomparison Projects (MIPs) where biogeochemical and aerosol components are of critical importance to delivering realistic future projections. Such components include: the terrestrial and marine carbon cycle, vegetation processes, permafrost, atmospheric chemistry and aerosols.
